Bloodstained ceiling (Chitenjo) of Genko-an temple in Kyoto, Japan

In the early 1600s, Fushimi Castle was the site of a bloody massacre in which 2,000 warriors stood against an army of 40,000. They held off the attackers for 12 days. When the end was near, the remaining 370 defenders committed Seppuku; ritualistic suicide. The castle was eventually dismantled, and the floor boards were recycled into the ceiling for 7 temples within Kyoto. I took this image today at Genko-an temple.
